The 29th Annual Razzie Award Winners (2009)
February 24th 2009 06:50
The 29th Annual Razzie Awards have come and gone and the worst of the worst in film for 2008 has been announced. The big winners, or losers, however you choose to look at it, were Mike Myers and Paris Hilton with three awards a piece, as well as Director Uwe Boll, who was given the Worst Career Achievement Award for his atrocities committed against cinema, as well as the Worst Director of 2008.
The organiser of the Razzies, John Wilson said of Myers, who co-wrote and starred in “The Love Guru”, won Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay and Worst Actor “This is one of those auteur-of-the-awful situations. Mike wouldn’t collect his prizes. I think people are tired of him in general. He hasn't really made a good movie in quite some time.”
Hilton took out the both the Worst Actress for “The Hottie and the Nottie” and Worst Supporting Actress for “Repo! The Genetic Opera”, as well as the Worst Onscreen Couple with Christine Lakin or Joel David Moore in “The Hottie and the Nottie”. John Wilson said of Paris: “She is famous for who she hangs out with. She's not famous for any talent she has yet exhibited.”
Other Award Winners included Worst Supporting Actor Pierce Brosnan in “Mamma Mia!” and “Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” which took the Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel prize.
The full list of winners is:
Worst Picture: The Love Guru
Worst Actor: Mike Myers - The Love Guru
Worst Actress: Paris Hilton - The Hottie And The Nottie
Worst Supporting Actress: Paris Hilton - Repo! The Genetic Opera
Worst Supporting Actor: Pierce Brosnan - Mamma Mia!
Worst Screen Couple: Paris Hilton and with Christine Lakin OR Joel David Moore - The Hottie And The Nottie
Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel: Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Worst Director: Uwe Boll - 1968: Tunnel Rats, In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale and Postal
Worst Screenplay: Mike Myers and Graham Gordy - The Love Guru
Worst Career Achievement: Uwe Boll
After movies such as “Disaster Movie” and “Meet the Spartans”, who had after five nominations each, as well as “The Happening”, which was an early favourite for Worst Picture and had four nominations, all failed to receive a single award. Most perplexing was “The Happening” which was slammed all over the board by most people who saw it.
Wilson also spoke about the reason these expensive films were seen as such wastes of time. “When you invest the kind of money that a mainstream, big-budget star film requires, you want some insurance that your investment is going to come back to you. So... you're going to do what worked before. Financially that may make sense, but in terms of the audience's enjoyment, surprise or appreciation of what you're doing, it doesn't work."
With 2009 already in full swing, The Razzie judges already have a few films in their crosshairs including “Hannah Montana”, “Friday the 13th” and “Bride Wars”. But then again it’s hard to predict at this stage. We’ll just have to see what misguided cinematic abominations are going to be released this year. Surely someone will be able to stop Paris Hilton from making another movie though.
