TV: Scrubs: Med School (2009)
Ah, Scrubs. For a moment there I though you were terminal. But now you’re back bigger than ever. The same style of jokes that were in the original show are still there with crazy flashbacks and segues but it seems like it has been slightly tweaked. I’ve only seen the first two episodes so far and I’ve got to say they’ve done a good job. It may not be the old show that I know and love but it is back in some form. It’ll be different when Zach Braff leaves in a couple of week’s time but I’m glad he still has something to do with the show.
The show has moved solely from the inside of Sacred Heart hospital, which has been massively renovated, to a medical school setting which is based at the hospital. Quite a few of the old characters are back. Zach Braff’s JD, as I said before, is back for 6 episodes, and others like Sarah Chalke’s Eliot are back for a few episodes. While Turk (Donald Faison), Perry Cox (John C McGinley) and Denise (Eliza Coupe) are back as the main characters, others like the Janitor (Neil Flynn, who is now in the show ‘The Middle’) and Judy Reyes’ Carla are not coming back, even in a guest star capacity. But there are some newbies to look forward to. The oldest intern, Drew (Michael Mosley) is basically the same as Denise’s character, except male. Then we have the new JD, Lucy (Kerry Bishe), the emotionally insecure fighter. She really seems like a mix of JD and early Eliot. And the last new main intern is Cole (Dave Franco, James Franco’s brother), an absolute douche of a jerk character who is also very creepy and sleazy, mostly cause his dad is a major contributor to the new hospital (seems like a Todd character except smart).
One of the things the new show is missing though is the drama. The dramatic nature of the show was what made it one of my favourite shows to start with. It’s missing that and the endings have been a bit messy when they used to be neatly rapped up with a funny and/or dramatic twist in most cases. The other thing is there are so many characters, the shows are a little disjointed but this will be fixed after a few weeks when they work out all the kinks of the new show. But either way I’m glad it’s back. Some of the lines are hilarious, some are a bit stale, but it’s brand new Scrubs so I’m stoked. Some people may say it’s not as good as the old episodes but it’s a different show now, so I’m going to enjoy it for what it is now and I hope you all do as well.
